Theresienwiese is a large open space in central Munich most famous as the site of the annual Oktoberfest beer festival. The area has been used for fairs and public events since the 19th century and is an established city festival ground.

The site accommodates large beer tents, rides, exhibition halls and festival infrastructure during Oktoberfest and also hosts other seasonal fairs such as the spring festival. Outside major events it functions as an open lawn used for markets, smaller events and temporary installations.

Named after Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, the field has long connections to Munich’s civic celebrations and is served directly by the Theresienwiese U-Bahn station, giving convenient public transport access.

Theresienwiese sits to the west of Munich’s central Altstadt, between the main train station area and the Theresienhöhe and Schwanthalerhöhe districts, within walking distance of central Munich.

• Check the event calendar before visiting - Theresienwiese hosts many large fairs and flea markets outside Oktoberfest that close off parts of the site, and arriving on a non‑event day lets you view landmarks like the Bavaria statue without crowds.
