Theban Necropolis
Archaeological Site Ancient Egyptian burial complex across from Luxor
The Theban Necropolis on Luxor’s west bank includes royal tombs, mortuary temples and burial sites from the New Kingdom. Tourists explore the Valley of the Kings, painted tombs and guided archaeological tours.
The Theban Necropolis is the extensive funerary landscape on the west bank of the Nile opposite the modern city of Luxor, used over many centuries as the burial area for pharaohs, queens and elite officials. It encompasses multiple specialised complexes and cemeteries, making it one of the largest and archaeologically richest necropoleis in Egypt.
Key components include the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens and the mortuary temples such as Deir el-Bahri; visitors also see private tombs of officials and rock‑cut chapels. Tomb interiors feature painted and carved funerary scenes, but many tombs have restricted access for conservation and visitor safety.
Use of the necropolis spans from at least the Middle Kingdom into the New Kingdom and later periods, when Thebes (ancient Waset) was a principal political and religious centre. Royal tombs were constructed, looted, reused and conserved at different times, reflecting changing funerary practices and historical events.
The necropolis lies on the Nile’s west bank opposite Luxor (the modern city built on the site of ancient Thebes), set against desert cliffs and easy to reach from Luxor by road.
- Ticketing and access: Many individual tombs require separate tickets and some are closed periodically for conservation; plan visits and book in advance where possible.
- Best time to visit: Best visited in the cooler months (roughly October through April) to avoid extreme heat and to make extended outdoor exploration more comfortable.
