Theaterplatz (Dresden)

Theaterplatz is a prominent public square in the historic centre of Dresden, Saxony, Germany. It forms a core part of the city’s baroque and 19th-century cultural precinct and is bounded by major landmarks.

The square provides immediate access to the Semperoper (the city opera) and is a common gathering place for visitors heading to concerts, state events and guided tours. Architectural highlights that define the plaza include the opera house, the Catholic Cathedral and the nearby Dresden Castle, making it a compact area for sightseeing.

The square and its surrounding buildings were heavily damaged in World War II and extensively reconstructed in the postwar decades and again after German reunification. Restoration efforts have returned many façades and public spaces to their historical appearances.

Situated on the north bank of the Elbe in central Dresden, the square is within walking distance of the Brühl’s Terrace and other key attractions of the historic city centre.

• Best viewpoint: The square sits directly in front of the city's principal opera house and offers one of the best consolidated views of Dresden's reconstructed baroque center.
