The Green Vault (Grünes Gewölbe) is a historic treasure museum located in Dresden’s Residenzschloss (Dresden Castle) in Saxony, Germany. Its collections of jewels, goldwork and courtly treasures were assembled for the Wettin electors and kings, notably by Augustus the Strong in the early 18th century.

The institution comprises historic baroque display rooms and a later reorganization that presents selected objects individually; the Green Vault showcases royal table objects, gemstones, cameos and intricate ivory and metalwork. The collections originate from the Saxon court and reflect the tastes and collecting practices of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Green Vault remains one of Europe’s notable historic treasure chambers, located within the central museum complex of Dresden’s Residenzschloss and regularly open to the public subject to ticketing and conservation-led access limits.

What to See#

• Historic Green Vault (Historisches Grünes Gewölbe): The Historic Green Vault preserves original 18th-century baroque display cabinets and arrangements created for the court of Augustus the Strong and presents a sequence of small treasure rooms in the Residenzschloss.
• New Green Vault (Neues Grünes Gewölbe): The New Green Vault arranges objects individually behind glass and emphasizes the craftsmanship of jewels, goldwork and hardstone objects; both collections are housed within Dresden Castle.

The Green Vault (Grünes Gewölbe) is in Dresden’s Residenzschloss in the Altstadt (city centre). From Dresden Hauptbahnhof it’s an easy walk into the Altstadt (roughly 10-20 minutes) or a short ride on the city tram/taxi to the Schloss/Theaterplatz area.

• Book timed-entry tickets on the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden website well before your visit-the Historic Green Vault and the New/Neues Green Vault are managed separately and popular time slots sell out.
• Arrive exactly at your ticket time, leave large bags in available lockers and expect strict photography and security rules inside the display rooms.
• If the main Green Vault session is sold out, try off-peak late-afternoon slots or combine a visit with nearby collections (e.g., the Armory or Coin Cabinet) that often have separate availability.
• Allow time for the smaller adjoining rooms and explanatory panels; many visitors focus on the crown jewels and miss the craftsmanship on display in the less crowded chambers.
