The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections) is a group of museums and collections in Dresden, Saxony, that together form one of Europe’s most important museum complexes. Its holdings span fine art, applied arts, porcelain, prints, manuscripts and historic treasures.

The Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault) - the former royal treasury established by Augustus the Strong - the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in the Zwinger with its collection of Old Master paintings including Raphael’s “Sistine Madonna,” and the large Porcelain Collection also displayed in the Zwinger.

The collections were assembled over several centuries by the electors and kings of Saxony and were damaged during the bombing of Dresden in 1945; extensive postwar restoration and conservation work has returned many pieces to display. The institutions operate multiple museum buildings and rotating exhibitions to show conserved works and loans.

The museums are concentrated in central Dresden around the Residenzschloss and the Zwinger palace, close to the Elbe river and Dresden’s historic center.

What to See#

• Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault): The historic treasury established by Augustus the Strong in the early 18th century, containing precious court treasures and jewel-encrusted objects gathered in the Residenzschloss.
• Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister: The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in the Zwinger palace housing major paintings including works by Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt and others; the collection includes the famous “Sistine Madonna” by Raphael.
• Porcelain Collection: The Porcelain Collection housed in the Zwinger, with European and Asian porcelain holdings displayed in period rooms and cabinets dating from the 18th century onward.

The ensemble sits in Dresden’s historic center on the north bank of the Elbe near Theaterplatz. From Dresden Hauptbahnhof take tram lines 3 or 4 to Postplatz or walk about 20 minutes along Prager Straße.
