Theater auf der Wieden

The Theater auf der Wieden was an 18th-century suburban theatre in Vienna’s Wieden district best known for musical theater of the late classical era. It is most famous as the venue where Mozart’s Singspiel Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) premiered in 1791.

The site is primarily of historical interest because of its association with Emanuel Schikaneder’s theatrical company and the premiere of The Magic Flute; it is studied by music historians and enthusiasts of Mozart’s work. There is no extant original theatre building in its 18th-century form, so interest centers on historical records and the theatre’s legacy in Viennese cultural history.

The theatre was run by Emanuel Schikaneder and his troupe in the late 1780s and early 1790s and staged operas, Singspiele and popular entertainment of the period. The Magic Flute was first performed there on 30 September 1791; the company and venue were important to Vienna’s late 18th-century theatrical life.

Historically located in Vienna’s Wieden district (today part of the 4th district), the theatre stood in the area south of the city centre where commercial and residential streets now occupy the site.
