Theater am Kärntnertor
Theater Historic Vienna opera house and former imperial theatre
The site of a historic Vienna theatre once central to 18th-19th-century opera life; visitors explore the area for classical-music history and its proximity to the modern State Opera.
The Theater am Kärntnertor was a principal theatre in central Vienna, located by the Kärntnertor gate on what is now Kärntner Straße. It played a major role in the city’s musical and theatrical life during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The theatre hosted operas, plays and public performances and underwent multiple rebuildings and renovations over its active life. It was eventually closed and the site redeveloped in the later 19th century, with the theatre no longer standing in its original form.
The former theatre stood in central Vienna close to the present-day St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the historic Ring and shopping streets that now define the city centre.
