The Shard
Building Tall London skyscraper with observation decks and offices
Glass-clad skyscraper on London’s South Bank with public viewing platforms. Visitors ride fast lifts for sweeping city views, dine in high-level restaurants and watch the Thames corridor from above.
The Shard is a high-rise building in central London completed in 2012 and designed by architect Renzo Piano. It rises to 310 metres and contains offices, restaurants, a hotel and public viewing levels near its summit.
The principal attraction for visitors is the multi-level observation experience that provides panoramic views across London and out to the surrounding counties on clear days. Dining venues and a luxury hotel occupy several of the building’s upper floors, while lower floors are used for offices and services.
The Shard was developed as a mixed-use tower and has become a prominent element of the London skyline since completion. Its location in the London Bridge quarter places it adjacent to major transport hubs including London Bridge station.
The tower stands on the south bank of the River Thames near London Bridge in central London and is easily reached by rail and underground services; it anchors the redeveloped riverside district.
- Height and views: At 310 metres the building is one of the tallest in the United Kingdom and provides panoramic views across London from its public viewing levels.
- Visitor tips: Tickets for the public viewing gallery are timed-entry and are often busier at sunset; booking in advance is recommended at peak times.
What to See #
- Viewing gallery: The View from The Shard is the public observation area offering multiple viewing levels with 360-degree views across London.
- Restaurants and hotel: Mixed-use floors include offices, restaurants and a hotel occupying a block of middle levels, with public dining at high levels that overlook the city.
How to Get to The Shard #
The Shard sits immediately beside London Bridge station. Take the Underground (Jubilee or Northern lines) or National Rail to London Bridge - the building is a 2-5 minute walk from the station exits. River services also call at London Bridge City Pier, a short walk from the Shard.
Tips for Visiting The Shard #
- Prebook a timed ticket for The View from The Shard and choose either an early opening slot or a late-evening/sunset slot; these times are quieter and offer the best light for photos without long queues.
- Use London Bridge station as your entry point-the Shard is a short, signposted walk from the station and from several river piers, which saves time compared with approaching from less direct routes.
- If weather is poor on your planned date, exchange or rebook in advance: visibility can change quickly at that height, so check the forecast and pick a clear day for the best panorama.
Best Time to Visit The Shard #
The Shard is accessible year‑round; to avoid crowds, visit weekdays or in off‑peak months, and book timed tickets in advance.
