The Needles is the southeastern district of Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah, noted for its dense clusters of vertical sandstone spires and complex canyonlands topography.
The landforms result from the erosion of Cedar Mesa Sandstone and long-term geologic uplift and jointing. The Needles area was incorporated into Canyonlands National Park when the park was established to protect the region’s distinctive desert geology and archaeological sites.
Located in southeastern Utah, the Needles district lies within San Juan County and is accessed from secondary roads that connect to U.S. highways; the nearest service towns include Blanding and Monticello.

How to Get to The Needles #

- Visit at sunrise or late afternoon for soft light on the sandstone spires and quieter trails.
- Permits are required for backcountry camping-check the NPS site before planning overnight trips.
