In Canyonlands National Park, the Maze district contains a labyrinth of remote canyons and mesas reached by long dirt roads and multi-day hikes. Visitors come for technical backcountry routes, 4x4 drives, and expansive canyon views.
How to Get to The Maze #
Access to The Maze is via long backcountry roads from Hanksville or other southeastern Utah gateway towns; most approaches require high-clearance 4WD and hours of dirt-road driving. Permits are required for overnight backcountry travel-obtain these from the NPS in advance.
Tips for Visiting The Maze #
- If attempting a Maze route, use a high-clearance 4WD and travel with recovery gear and satellite communication-cell coverage is minimal to nonexistent.
- Obtain a backcountry permit from the NPS for overnight stays; the Maze is permit-only for many routes.
- Plan water carefully-there are no reliable water sources in the Maze District; caches and packing-in are typical.
Best Time to Visit The Maze #
Spring and fall are the best times for exploring The Maze-temperatures are moderate and access is safer. Summer can be dangerously hot, and winter snows can close some routes.
