The Jantar Mantar, Jaipur
Historical Site Collection of monumental astronomical instruments for timekeeping
An ensemble of large stone astronomical instruments built in the 18th century; visitors inspect massive sundials, learn pre‑modern observational techniques, and photograph precise angular scales and masonry craftsmanship.
The Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is an 18th-century astronomical observatory built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II as a set of large-scale instruments for observing celestial movements. The complex consists of masonry and stone devices laid out in a planned arrangement inside a walled precinct in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
Prominent instruments include a giant triangular sundial, hemispherical and cylindrical devices that allow direct sighting and measurement of positions, and a set of calibrated scales and markings used for tracking time and celestial coordinates. The scale and precision of the masonry instruments make the observatory one of the best-preserved examples of pre-modern observational astronomy.
The observatory was constructed in the early 1700s under the patronage of Jai Singh II to improve astronomical tables and astrological calculations, and it formed part of a wider programme of scientific and urban initiatives. It continues to be studied for its mix of empirical observation and traditional astronomical practice.
Located in the walled city of Jaipur, the site is accessible from the city’s main streets and is close to other historic landmarks in the city centre.
- Date and instruments: Built in the early 18th century by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the site contains 19 large-scale masonry instruments arranged within a walled compound.
What to See #
- Samrat Yantra: The Samrat Yantra, a large triangular sundial about 27 m high that serves as the observatory's principal timekeeping instrument.
- Jai Prakash and other instruments: The Jai Prakash sundials and other hemispherical instruments used for observing altitudes and tracking celestial coordinates.
- Ram Yantra and Chakra Yantra: Rotating and cylindrical instruments such as the Ram Yantra and the Chakra Yantra used for measuring zenith and azimuth positions of celestial bodies.
