The Colonial Transisthmian Route of Panamá

The Colonial Transisthmian Route of Panamá is a historic corridor of roads, paths and port sites across the Isthmus of Panama associated with colonial-era movement of people and goods between the Atlantic and Pacific. The route reflects the logistical and strategic role of the isthmus in transoceanic connections during the colonial period.

The route includes sections of historic trackways, river crossings and colonial-era ports and settlements that were used for the carriage of goods, travellers and official traffic across the isthmus before more modern transport infrastructures were established. Many of the surviving route elements retain traces of original paving, milestones or associated buildings.

These historic transit corridors were created and maintained by colonial Spanish authorities and local actors to support trade, administrative control and movement across the narrowest part of Central America. Over time the routes changed as new roads, railways and ports were developed.

Geographically the route runs across the Panama Isthmus and has components in Colón Province and other areas close to both Atlantic and Pacific coasts, following lowland corridors and river valleys where crossing the isthmus was most practicable.
