How to Get to Thanh Hóa
Thanh Hóa is served by Thọ Xuân Airport (THD) for domestic flights and by Thanh Hóa Railway Station (Ga Thanh Hóa) on Vietnam's North-South line. Many visitors arrive by train from Hanoi or fly into Thọ Xuân; international travellers often use Noi Bai (HAN) and continue by bus or train to Thanh Hóa.
Thọ Xuân Airport (THD): Thọ Xuân is the local airport serving Thanh Hóa province with domestic flights (Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet, Bamboo Airways). From the airport to Thanh Hóa city centre there are airport shuttle buses and shared vans (approx. 50,000 VND, ~50-70 minutes), or metered taxis/ride-hailing (Grab) which typically take about 45-60 minutes and cost roughly 300,000-500,000 VND depending on traffic.
Noi Bai International Airport (HAN): Hanoi’s Noi Bai is the nearest major international airport for overseas arrivals. From Noi Bai you can take bus 86 or an airport shuttle into Hanoi city (≈30,000-50,000 VND, ~45-60 minutes) and then transfer to a train or intercity bus to Thanh Hóa (see Train & Bus card). A taxi from Noi Bai to Ga Hà Nội (Hanoi Railway Station) is ~300,000-450,000 VND (40-60 minutes) if you prefer a single transfer.
Train: Thanh Hóa is served by Ga Thanh Hóa on the North-South (Reunification) railway. Regular trains run between Hanoi and Thanh Hóa (popular Reunification Express and regional services); typical journey times from Hanoi are about 2.5-3.5 hours and tickets commonly range from ~70,000-200,000 VND depending on class (hard/soft seat, berth).
Bus: Intercity buses and private shuttle services run to Bến xe Thanh Hóa (Thanh Hóa Bus Station) from Hanoi (My Dinh, Giáp Bát) and other cities; trip duration from Hanoi is around 3-4 hours and fares are typically in the 120,000-250,000 VND range. Local city buses also connect neighbourhoods and nearby districts with very low fares (see Getting Around).
How to Get Around Thanh Hóa
Getting around Thanh Hóa is easiest by motorbike (either GrabBike/xe ôm or a rented scooter) for flexibility, while taxis and GrabCar are convenient for groups or luggage. Buses and trains are the budget-friendly choices for longer hops; for sightseeing the downtown area is walkable and pleasant to explore on foot.
- City buses (5,000-15,000 VND) - Thanh Hóa has a small network of city and regional buses linking the central districts and nearby towns. Fares are very cheap and paid on board; routes and timetables can be limited so check locally or ask at the bus station. Buses are the most economical option but can be slower and less frequent than taxis or Grab.
- Taxi (Mai Linh, Vinasun) (40,000-150,000 VND) - Metered taxis from established companies are widely available and are the most comfortable door-to-door option. Expect short downtown rides to cost around 40,000-150,000 VND; always request the meter or confirm the fare for airport transfers. Taxis are reliable for luggage and off-peak travel but can be pricier than app rides.
- Grab/Be (ride-hailing) (15,000-120,000 VND) - Grab and Be operate in Thanh Hóa for both motorbike and car trips; the apps usually give the best last-mile prices and estimated arrival times. GrabBike (motorbike) is often the fastest way through traffic for solo travellers, while GrabCar competes with taxis on price. Payment can be cash or card depending on driver settings.
- Xe ôm & motorbike rental (20,000-200,000 VND) - Local motorbike taxis (xe ôm) are good for short hops and can be cheaper than car options-negotiate the fare beforehand if the driver won't use the app. Day rentals for a motorbike are common if you want to explore nearby beaches or countryside; expect around 120,000-200,000 VND per day for a simple scooter. Be sure to carry an appropriate licence and a helmet.
- Regional trains (Ga Thanh Hóa) (70,000-200,000 VND) - Ga Thanh Hóa sits in the city and is the best option for comfortable travel to Hanoi and other points on the Reunification line. Trains are reliable for medium-distance trips, offer more legroom than buses, and are worth it if you prefer fixed schedules; fares depend on class but typically fall in the 70,000-200,000 VND range for Hanoi-Thanh Hóa trains. Book overnight or express seats in advance during holidays.
- Walking - The central districts of Thanh Hóa are compact and easy to explore on foot-museums, markets and the riverside are within walking distance for most visitors. Sidewalks can be uneven in places and motorbikes use the roads actively, so take care when crossing streets and avoid busy roads at peak times.
