Tham Kong Lo
Cave Long river cave with dramatic karst limestone passage

Tham Kong Lo is a large karst cave in Khammouane Province, central Laos, where the Nam Hinboun River flows through a long underground passage. The site is best known for the navigable river that runs inside the cave, creating a unique boat-accessible natural feature.
The main attraction is a boat trip through the cave along the approximately 7.5-kilometre river passage, which passes rock formations and chambers and takes visitors from the cave entrance to the far end of the navigable stretch. The cave mouth and immediate surroundings are often included in day trips organized from nearby towns, and local guides operate the boat trips.
The cave formed by karst processes over geological time and has been used and known by local communities for generations; in recent decades it has been developed for tourism with local services at the entrance village. Facilities are basic in the village and visitation is generally seasonal, depending on river water levels.

Tips for Visiting Tham Kong Lo #
- Travel with a local driver from Ban Na or Thakhek - the road is rough and seasonal; allow 4-6 hours from Thakhek.
- Hire an experienced boatman at the cave mouth rather than trying to negotiate your own raft; boats are the only practical way through the river passage.
- Go early in the morning for cooler boat rides and softer light on the cave walls; the return trip can feel rushed if water levels drop in late afternoon.
- Bring a light waterproof jacket and a headlamp; the boat ride is damp and the few walking sections are muddy.
