Teruel Cathedral Church

Teruel Cathedral (Catedral de Santa María de Mediavilla) is the principal church of Teruel in Aragon, Spain, noted for its fusion of Gothic structure and Mudéjar decorative arts. The building is particularly recognised for its ornate brick tower and richly decorated wooden ceilings and domes.

The cathedral combines a Gothic plan with Mudéjar (Islamic-influenced) decorative techniques in brickwork, tile and woodwork; the tower and dome are the most visually distinctive exterior and interior elements. These features contributed to its inscription as part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Mudejar Architecture of Aragon.

Construction and later modifications span the medieval and early modern centuries, producing a layered complex with Gothic chapels and Mudéjar ornamentation that illustrates regional artistic exchange. The cathedral remains an active religious building and a focal point in Teruel’s historic centre.

From Teruel’s bus or train stations you can reach the cathedral on foot in around 5-15 minutes through the city centre; local streets lead directly to the plaza.
