Terezín City
Historic fortress town and WWII concentration camp site
Terezín keeps crowds for difficult reasons: the 18th‑century fortress and the Nazi-era ghetto and Small Fortress prison museum. Visitors trace ramparts, barracks and memorials, and confront patient archives and exhibitions about wartime deportations.
Why Visit Terezín?#
A somber but important destination, this fortified town attracts visitors who come to study 20th-century history and remembrance at the Terezín Memorial and the Small Fortress. The austere Habsburg-era fortifications and museum exhibits provide context for wartime stories, while guided tours and archival collections deepen understanding. Visitors often pair a stay here with cultural trips to Prague for a reflective, historically focused visit.

How to Get to Terezín#
Terezín (the fortress town) is a short trip northwest of Prague and is typically visited as a day trip from the capital. Prague’s airports and rail/bus hubs provide the onward regional connections to Lovosice/Litoměřice and then local buses or taxis to Terezín.
Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG): Prague is the nearest major international airport for Terezín. From PRG take public transit into Prague centre (Airport Express buses or AE/119 + metro) - the airport transfer is about 30-40 minutes and costs around 60-90 CZK (~€2.50-€4). From Prague’s main stations you can continue by regional bus or train to reach Terezín.
Other Czech airports: There are no commercial airports closer than Prague for general visitors to Terezín; Prague remains the practical international gateway.
Train: There is no direct train into the historic Terezín fortress itself. The nearest rail access is Lovosice station on the Prague-Ústí nad Labem line; from Lovosice it’s a short bus or taxi ride to Terezín (Lovosice-Terezín by taxi ~10 minutes).
Bus: Regional buses run from Prague (e.g., from ÚAN Florenc or railway stations with connections via Litoměřice/Lovosice) to Terezín. Journey times from Prague are about 50-75 minutes depending on route; regional bus fares are modest (typically a few dozen CZK, ~€1-€4). Check regional bus timetables for seasonal departures.
How to Get Around Terezín#
Most visitors reach Terezín from Prague either by regional bus or by train to Lovosice plus a short taxi/bus connection. Organised tours are convenient for a single‑day visit and remove the need to plan transfers.
- Regional bus (CZK 30-120 (€1-€4)) - Buses from Prague via Litoměřice/Lovosice are the normal public option for reaching Terezín. Buses are inexpensive and reach the fortress area directly from nearby hub towns; schedules vary so check timetables in advance.
- Train + taxi/bus (via Lovosice) (CZK 50-150 (€2-€6) combined) - Take a train from Prague to Lovosice then a short taxi or local bus to Terezín. This combination can be faster depending on connections and is a reliable option for day trips.
- Guided tours / coach (€25-€60 per tour) - Many visitors take organised day tours from Prague that include guided access to the fortress and museum; these include transport and are hassle‑free, especially if you prefer a single booking.
- Car hire (€25-€60/day) - Driving from Prague takes roughly 45-60 minutes and gives freedom to visit nearby sites like Litoměřice. Parking at the Terezín museum/fortress area is available but can be limited during peak season.
- Bicycle (€5-€20/day) - For active visitors, cycling routes exist around the Elbe valley connecting Lovosice and nearby towns; be prepared for variable terrain and longer distances if approaching from Prague.
- Walking - Terezín’s key sites - the fortress, museums and memorials - are concentrated and best seen on foot. Expect significant walking between exhibits; wear comfortable shoes.
