Tenggol Island
Island Malaysian island with coral reefs and diving sites
Off Terengganu’s coast, Tenggol attracts divers and snorkelers for coral reefs, clear water and occasional liveaboard trips; small local settlements and seasonal boat access make it a quieter alternative to nearby islands.
Tenggol Island is an island off the coast of Terengganu on Malaysia’s east coast, known for reef diving and clear water rather than large-scale development.
Shallow reefs and rocky shorelines around the island support coral growth and attract snorkellers and scuba divers; turtle sightings are reported by dive operators. Small resorts and guesthouses provide basic accommodation and dive services rather than large hotels.
The island has had only light development and has no major urban centres; its economy is centred on tourism and fishing. Facilities are concentrated at a few sheltered bays with piers for visiting boats.
Tenggol sits off the Terengganu mainland and is reached by boat from coastal launch points such as Marang or Dungun. The island lies within the tropical east-coast marine zone of Peninsular Malaysia.
- Best season: The east-coast monsoon typically makes diving and boat access seasonal; the main visitor season runs roughly from March to October when sea conditions are calmer.
- How to get there: Access is by boat from Terengganu mainland launch points such as Marang and Dungun, with journey times depending on sea conditions and operator.
What to See #
- Diving and snorkel sites: A number of nearshore dive and snorkel sites around the island with coral gardens and rocky outcrops that are regularly visited by liveaboard and day-boat operators.
- Resorts and visitor facilities: Small resort and guesthouse development concentrated on the island's sheltered bays that provide basic visitor accommodation and dive services.
