Best Time to Visit Tengchong#
Tengchong is nicest outside the monsoon - aim for November-April for drier trails and clearer views. May-October sees heavy rain but lush scenery and fuller waterfalls.

How to Get to Tengchong#
Tengchong is best reached by regional flight to Tengchong Tuofeng Airport (TCZ) or by long-distance bus from Kunming/Baoshan. Once there, local buses and taxis make getting around straightforward for short distances.
Tengchong Tuofeng Airport (TCZ): Tengchong’s regional airport handles flights from Kunming and other Yunnan cities. From the airport to Tengchong town the drive is about 30-40 minutes; airport shuttle buses cost around CNY 15-30 and taxis typically cost CNY 40-100 depending on luggage and exact drop-off.
Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG): For more international connections fly into Kunming and take a domestic flight to Tengchong (about 1 hour) or a long-distance bus (6-8 hours) - the bus is cheaper but much longer (bus fares roughly CNY 100-200).
Train: There is currently no major high‑speed rail directly into Tengchong; the nearest larger rail hubs are in Baoshan or Kunming, from which you transfer by bus or car. Check China Railway for routes to nearby cities.
Bus: Long-distance buses run to Tengchong from Kunming, Baoshan and other Yunnan centres. Bus travel from Kunming typically takes around 6-8 hours with fares roughly CNY 100-200; buses from Baoshan are shorter and cheaper. Local shuttle buses and taxis connect the Tengchong bus station with town and tourist sites.
How to Get Around Tengchong#
Flights to Tengchong Tuofeng Airport are the fastest option; long-distance buses from Kunming offer cheaper alternatives. Inside Tengchong taxis and local buses cover most needs, while the town centre is compact enough for walking.
- Airport Shuttle / Bus (CNY 15-30) - Shuttle buses from Tengchong Airport serve the town centre and major hotels; they are economical and drop at central stops. Frequency matches flight arrivals, but check schedules in advance if traveling late. Fares are usually modest.
- Taxi (CNY 40-100) - Taxis are the quickest way to reach hotels and attractions from the airport or bus station. Expect a 30-40 minute ride from the airport to the town centre with fares often between CNY 40-100. Negotiate or ask the meter to be used where possible.
- Long-distance Bus (CNY 100-200) - Buses link Tengchong with Kunming, Baoshan and other Yunnan cities. They are slower than flights but cheaper; journeys from Kunming take around 6-8 hours and cost roughly CNY 100-200. Book at bus stations or use local agents.
- Local Bus / Shuttle (CNY 2-15) - Local buses and hotel shuttles cover nearby villages and tourist sites (hot springs, historic streets). They are cheap but can be limited in frequency outside peak tourist times; combining buses with short taxi rides is common.
- Car Hire / Driver (CNY medium-high) - Hiring a car with a driver is convenient for visiting dispersed attractions around Tengchong (hot springs, volcanic parks). Roads in the county are generally passable, and a driver familiar with local routes saves time. Expect higher costs than public transport.
- Walking - Tengchong town centre and its historic streets are pleasant to explore on foot; key sights are within walking distance of each other. Wear comfortable shoes for cobbled streets and light hills.
