Tengchong Travel Guide

Tengchong is a town in the southwest corner of Yunnan Province, 750kms west of Kunming. It has enough appeal to warrant a visit on its own merits, owing to the huge amount of volcanic activity in the region.

There are close to 100 volcanoes in the Tengchong region, many of which are still active, such as Beat Hawk Mountain (Daying Shan). It lies in the Volcano Park along with many other Cenozoic-era volcanoes, and is the tallest cone here. Also be sure to see Ma’an Mountain for its three cones and crater lakes.

Visitors pay to get in the park but it is well worth it as there is a hot spring swimming pool and several other cool springs: Frog Mouth, Lion Head, and Pearl Spring. You can also hike, see the waterfall at Zaotang River, and take a balloon ride over the park. Dagunguo (Big Boiling Bowl) is another popular attraction.

Getting There & Away

Tengchong is best reached by bus from nearby Baoshan, where there is an airport. Baoshan is a 2-hour bus ride and receives flights from Kunming in about 50 minutes. A direct morning bus from Kunming to Tengchong takes 11 hours along the G320 Burma Road. Bus number C runs to the Volcano Park, 10kms north of town.
