Tenedos City
Aegean island town with historic castle and vineyards
Known historically as Tenedos (today Bozcaada), the island tempts visitors with stone houses, a Venetian fortress, sunlit vineyards and seafood tavernas along quiet coves.
Why Visit Tenedos?#
This Aegean island combines wine country, Ottoman and Greek architecture, and sheltered beaches in a compact setting. Visitors explore the stone-lined streets of the old town and Bozcaada Castle, sip island wines produced from sun‑baked vineyards, and dine in seaside tavernas serving fresh seafood and mezes. Windmills, Ayazma beach and colorful fishing harbors give the island a distinct island rhythm that contrasts with Turkey’s larger coastal resorts.

How to Get to Tenedos#
Tenedos (Bozcaada) is a small Aegean island administered from Çanakkale Province; it’s reached by ferry from the mainland (Geyikli). The nearest airports are Çanakkale and İzmir with onward bus/road travel to the ferry terminal.
Çanakkale Airport (CKZ): Çanakkale airport serves the province; from Çanakkale city you continue by bus or car to the Geyikli ferry terminal for crossings to Tenedos (Bozcaada). Road transfer times vary - expect roughly 45-90 minutes depending on route and connections.
İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB): İzmir is a larger international option. From ADB you can travel by car or bus to the Çanakkale/Geyikli area (a multi-hour journey) and then take the ferry to Tenedos; this is practical when no direct connections exist from nearer airports.
Train: There is no direct passenger rail service that reaches the island - rail travel ends on the mainland and further travel is by road and ferry.
Bus: Intercity buses service Çanakkale and nearby towns; from Çanakkale city buses or minivans (dolmuş) run toward Geyikli (the mainland ferry port for Bozcaada/Tenedos). The Geyikli-Bozcaada ferry crossing is short (about 15-30 minutes) and runs regularly in season.
How to Get Around Tenedos#
The island is approached by ferry from Geyikli; once on Bozcaada, walking, cycling or short taxi rides are the easiest ways to get around. Mainland buses and car transfers connect to the ferry terminal.
- Ferry (Geyikli-Bozcaada) (Small passenger fares (seasonal) - check operator for current rates) - Regular ferries run from Geyikli (mainland) to Bozcaada/Tenedos; crossings are short (roughly 15-30 minutes). Ferries carry foot passengers and vehicles in season - check the latest timetable as frequency is seasonal and can change with weather.
- Intercity & regional buses (Local/intercity bus fares (TRY) - variable) - Buses and dolmuş services connect Çanakkale city and other towns to Geyikli ferry terminal. From Çanakkale the road journey typically takes around 45-90 minutes depending on route and stops; tickets are inexpensive and sold at terminals or on board.
- Car & vehicle ferry (Vehicle ferry fares vary by vehicle size and season) - Bringing a car on the ferry is common for visitors exploring the island - vehicle reservations can be helpful in peak season. Driving on Bozcaada is straightforward with short distances between beaches and villages.
- Taxis & dolmuş (Short fares - modest (TRY)) - Taxis and shared minibuses (dolmuş) run on the mainland and on the island for short trips; dolmuşes are the cheapest regular option for short distances and to reach the ferry terminal from nearby towns.
- Biking & scooters (Bike/scooter hire seasonal rates) - Bozcaada/Tenedos is small and popular with cyclists and scooter hire - this is a convenient, fun way to get around in summer, but watch for heat and dust on minor roads.
- Walking - The island’s main village, castle and tavernas are compact and best explored on foot.
