The Temple of Hercules is a Roman-period temple ruin located on the Amman Citadel (Jabal al-Qal’a) in central Amman. The remains date to the 2nd century AD and are among the most visible Roman monuments on the citadel.
Surviving fabric includes the temple’s monumental podium and several massive columns; a large stone hand and arm fragment thought to belong to a seated colossal statue are on display at the site. Visitors typically combine the temple visit with the citadel complex and its panoramic views.
Built during the Roman occupation of the region in the 2nd century AD, the temple was part of a larger sanctuary complex on the citadel plateau. Over time the superstructure fell into ruin and the site has been the subject of archaeological excavation and reconstruction of the surviving elements.
The temple stands on the elevated Amman Citadel in central Amman, within walking distance of the Roman Theatre and the city center.
