Temple of Hadrian
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman temple ruins incorporated into Rome's cityscape
On Rome’s Piazza di Pietra, the Temple of Hadrian preserves a row of 2nd‑century columns set into later fabric; visitors pass the classical columns while walking central Rome and reading ancient inscriptions.
The Temple of Hadrian is a Roman Imperial-era temple in Rome dating to the mid-2nd century CE, originally dedicated to the deified emperor Hadrian. Much of the original temple platform and a row of Corinthian columns survive and have been incorporated into a later palazzo facing Piazza di Pietra.
The temple was dedicated under the Antonine dynasty and the extant colonnade and podium remain visible in the modern square. The integration of ancient columns into the facade of a later building is a notable example of Rome’s continuous reuse of ancient structures.
The temple stands on Piazza di Pietra, close to other central Rome landmarks such as the Pantheon and Largo di Torre Argentina, in the historic core of the city.
- Surviving colonnade: Dedicated to the emperor Hadrian and completed in the mid-2nd century CE, the surviving colonnade of 11 Corinthian columns is integrated into a later building on Piazza di Pietra.
- Integration into later architecture: A large Roman-era podium and foundations lie beneath and around the modern palazzo that uses the temple ruins as part of its facade.
How to Get to Temple of Hadrian #
The Temple of Hadrian (Tempio di Adriano) stands at Piazza di Pietra on Via del Corso in central Rome, a few minutes’ walk from the Pantheon and other central landmarks. It is easily reached on foot from the historic centre; taxis and numerous local buses also serve the area. The nearest metro access is a short walk from Line A’s Barberini station (and other central stations) but walking from central sites like the Pantheon is often the most direct option.
Tips for Visiting Temple of Hadrian #
- See the Temple of Hadrian at dawn or dusk, when the low light flatters the surviving columns in Piazza di Pietra and the square is much quieter for photos.
- Walk the full perimeter of the piazza to appreciate how the ancient columns are set against later buildings and to spot details that are easy to miss from a single vantage point; it's an efficient stop to pair with the nearby Pantheon and Via del Corso.
