The Temple of Eshmun is an archaeological sanctuary near the coastal city of Sidon in southern Lebanon, dedicated to the Phoenician god Eshmun. The visible remains mainly reflect Hellenistic and Roman-phase construction built around an earlier Phoenician cult site.
The complex includes the remains of a walled sacred precinct, monumental stone construction and architectural fragments that indicate a major cult site with processional routes and altars. The scale of masonry and the mixture of Phoenician, Hellenistic and Roman building techniques are key features people examine on site.
The sanctuary began as a Phoenician religious center and was enlarged or rebuilt in later Hellenistic and Roman times; it was investigated by archaeologists in the 20th century who documented its plan and recovered architectural elements. Over time the site fell out of use as a cult center and its monuments survived as ruins until modern excavation and conservation.
The ruins lie inland from Lebanon’s southern coast near Sidon (Sour) in the South Governorate, set in a low-lying coastal plain with agricultural land nearby.
- Dedication and periods: The sanctuary is dedicated to the Phoenician healing god Eshmun and contains remains from Phoenician, Hellenistic, and Roman periods.
- Excavation highlights: Excavations in the 20th century exposed a large temenos, monumental stairways, and colonnaded works that form the visible ruin today.
