The complex includes a high pylon entrance, long processional courts, a hypostyle hall and inner sanctuaries decorated with scenes from Horus mythology. The temple was built in stages from 237 BCE to 57 BCE and remained a focal point for local religious life in the Ptolemaic period.
The site lies within the modern town of Edfu between Esna and Aswan and is accessible from the Nile; it is a common stop on Nile cruise itineraries between Luxor and Aswan.
- Construction dates: Construction began in 237 BCE and continued into the late 1st century BCE, making it one of the last major temple complexes built in the classical Egyptian tradition.
