Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae Historical Site

The Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae is a well-preserved classical Greek temple located on a ridge in the Peloponnese region of Greece. It is renowned for its distinctive combination of architectural orders and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The temple’s stone superstructure and column arrangement are unusually intact for a rural Greek sanctuary, allowing close study of Doric elevations and interior Ionic elements. Scholars and visitors note the presence of an early Corinthian capital inside the temple, an important technical and stylistic innovation.

The temple was constructed in the classical period and is commonly attributed to the architect Iktinos, who worked in the fifth century BCE. Over time sculptures and architectural fragments have been removed for conservation and study, with some pieces held in museums.

The sanctuary sits high on Mount Kotylion near the village of Bassae in the Peloponnese, providing an elevated position above the surrounding rural landscape and accessible from regional road routes.
