Telmessos was an ancient city of Lycia located on the southwestern coast of Anatolia; its remains lie within the modern town of Fethiye in Mu1Fla Province, Turkey. The site is notable for funerary rock-cut tombs carved into the coastal cliffs.
The most prominent visible features are the cliff tombs overlooking the modern harbour and the ruins of urban structures, including a theatre, scattered in and around the town. The site illustrates continuous occupation from Lycian through Hellenistic and Roman periods.
Telmessos functioned as a regional centre in antiquity and adapted through successive Hellenistic and Roman administrations before evolving into the medieval and modern settlement now called Fethiye.
The remains are located in and above the modern harbour of Fethiye on Turkey’s Aegean coast, within Mu1Fla Province.
