Tell Brak is an ancient archaeological tell in northeastern Syria in the Upper Khabur region. It is one of the Near East’s early complex settlements with long-term occupation spanning prehistoric into historic periods.
Excavations at the site have revealed monumental architecture, dense occupation layers and evidence for early urban organization; the site reached major urban scale in the late 4th millennium BCE. Archaeological work has focused on the central mound and adjacent satellite mounds that preserve stratified remains.
The tell was a regional centre in the third and fourth millennia BCE and shows phases of construction, fortification and reoccupation across millennia. Finds from the site have informed understanding of early state formation and settlement hierarchies in northern Mesopotamia.
Tell Brak sits in the Al-Hasakah Governorate of northeastern Syria, within the Khabur river basin. The site is located in a semi-arid landscape that supported early agricultural communities in antiquity.
