Tell Atlas
Mountains Coastal mountain range in North Africa
A coastal mountain chain across northern Algeria, the Tell Atlas frames the fertile Mediterranean strip north of the High Atlas. Visitors travel for mountain villages, hiking routes and cooler summer weather, with access from cities such as Algiers and Oran.
The Tell Atlas is the northernmost portion of the Atlas Mountain system, extending across northern Algeria and into parts of Tunisia and Morocco and running roughly parallel to the Mediterranean Sea. It forms the upland zone immediately inland from the coastal plain called the Tell.
The range offers forested ridges, karstic limestone scenery in places and a sequence of highland plateaus and valleys that are agricultural and populated where altitude and rainfall permit. Distinct subranges such as the Djurdjura in the Kabylie region present rugged peaks and traditional mountain villages.
The Tell Atlas has a markedly different climate and land use from the higher and more arid Saharan Atlas further south, with denser settlement and more intensive cultivation on its northern slopes. Routes across the range link coastal cities with interior highlands.
The Tell Atlas has long been the core of settled and cultivated country in northern North Africa, shaping historical routes, regional identities and local economies through traditional agriculture, forestry and town networks.
Running along Algeria’s northern belt close to the Mediterranean coast, the Tell Atlas forms the immediate upland backdrop to the coastal plain and includes several prominent highland areas and massifs within the country.
- Geographic role: The Tell Atlas is the northernmost chain of the Atlas Mountains and runs roughly east-west parallel to the Mediterranean coast, forming a climatic and geographic barrier.
- Human geography: Major Algerian cities and towns lie on or near its northern foothills, where the Mediterranean climate supports denser population and agriculture than the interior.
What to See #
- Djurdjura / Kabylie highlands: The Djurdjura and Kabylie highlands are significant subranges within the Tell Atlas, featuring steep forested slopes and rugged ridgelines.
- Tell plain: A strip of fertile coastal plain known as the Tell plain lies between the range and the Mediterranean, supporting major agricultural areas and population centres.
