Telica (volcano)

Telica is an active volcano in Nicaragua’s León Department, part of the volcanic chain in northwestern Nicaragua. It is one of the country’s most active volcanic cones, known for frequent small eruptions, crater degassing and occasional ash emissions.

The volcano rises to roughly 1,060 metres above sea level and has a summit crater that produces fumarolic activity and periodic strombolian-style explosions. The area around the crater shows volcanic deposits and features typical of a frequently active basaltic volcano.

Local guides and tour operators often run day trips from the city of León and nearby communities to viewpoints or supervised approaches to the crater rim when conditions permit. Safety measures and up-to-date volcanic activity information are essential before visiting.

Geographically Telica sits in western Nicaragua near the city of León, forming part of the Pacific volcanic front that runs through the country.
