Telegraph Hill is a prominent hill in northeastern San Francisco at the edge of North Beach and the northern waterfront, rising to about 275 feet (84 metres). It is best known for the landmark tower that crowns its summit and for panoramic views across the Bay.
Coit Tower occupies the hilltop and provides an observation deck with 360-degree views of the Golden Gate, the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz and the downtown skyline. The hill also features paved viewpoints, stairways and small parks that offer close-range city views and photo opportunities.
The hill acquired its modern appearance in the early 20th century; Coit Tower was completed in 1933 and was funded by a bequest for civic beautification. The tower interior contains murals from the 1930s executed as part of public art programs.
Telegraph Hill overlooks the Embarcadero and the northern waterfront of San Francisco, immediately adjacent to the North Beach neighbourhood and a short walk from downtown piers and the Financial District.
