Main image

Telegraph Hill is a prominent hill in northeastern San Francisco at the edge of North Beach and the northern waterfront, rising to about 275 feet (84 metres). It is best known for the landmark tower that crowns its summit and for panoramic views across the Bay.

Coit Tower occupies the hilltop and provides an observation deck with 360-degree views of the Golden Gate, the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz and the downtown skyline. The hill also features paved viewpoints, stairways and small parks that offer close-range city views and photo opportunities.

The hill acquired its modern appearance in the early 20th century; Coit Tower was completed in 1933 and was funded by a bequest for civic beautification. The tower interior contains murals from the 1930s executed as part of public art programs.

Telegraph Hill overlooks the Embarcadero and the northern waterfront of San Francisco, immediately adjacent to the North Beach neighbourhood and a short walk from downtown piers and the Financial District.

  • Best times to visit: Early morning and late-afternoon light produce the clearest vistas; sunset views are popular for city lights and the Bay Bridge illumination.
  • Visiting the tower: Interior access to the tower and murals may have limited hours or an admission fee; check opening times before visiting.

What to See #

  • Coit Tower: A 64-foot concrete tower completed in 1933 that sits atop the hill and contains New Deal-era murals; the tower also has an observation deck with 360-degree views.
  • Pioneer Park: A small municipal green space surrounding the tower with walking paths and viewpoints that look over the Embarcadero and the northern waterfront.
  • Scenic viewpoints: Several paved viewpoints and stair routes around the hill provide close-range views of the city, the Bay Bridge and Alcatraz.
