Tel Lachish
Archaeological Site Ancient fortified Canaanite and Israelite archaeological mound
Excavations at Tel Lachish expose fortification ramps, city gates and Iron Age layers; visitors come for biblical archaeology, hilltop views over the Shephelah and study of Canaanite/Israelite city planning.
Tel Lachish is an archaeological tell in the Shephelah region of southern Israel representing a major Bronze and Iron Age fortified city. It is one of the principal sites for studying Canaanite and Judahite urbanism and warfare.
The site features substantial Iron Age fortifications, a well-preserved gate complex and a clear siege ramp used during the city’s destruction in the late 8th or early 7th century BCE. Excavations have also uncovered administrative and domestic quarters, plus written ostraca that shed light on late Iron Age military and administrative matters.
Lachish was a major regional centre in the Bronze and Iron Ages and features in both archaeological records and contemporary Assyrian inscriptions. It was attacked and destroyed during Assyrian campaigns in the late 8th and early 7th centuries BCE, events that are recorded in external sources as well as the site’s destruction layers.
The tell stands on a strategic hill in the Shephelah, overlooking surrounding plains and close to modern transport routes in southern Israel. It is located near contemporary towns of the Lakhish area and is roughly within a one-hour drive southwest of Jerusalem depending on traffic.
- Assyrian connections: The Assyrian siege of the city is depicted on reliefs from Sennacherib's palace; those reliefs and related finds from Lachish are on display in major museums.
- Ostraca (Lachish letters): Excavations exposed written ostraca from the late 7th century BCE that provide direct evidence of administrative and military correspondence.
What to See #
- Gate complex: A multilayered gate and administrative area forming the fortified entrance to the city, with substantial stonework and foundations visible on the tell.
- Siege ramp and attack archaeology: A large earth-and-stone siege ramp and associated destruction layers that record the city's capture in the late Iron Age.
- Royal quarter and domestic areas: Remains of the fortified 'royal' sector and domestic quarters showing successive occupation from the Bronze Age through the Iron Age.
Tips for Visiting Tel Lachish #
- Plan your visit for spring/ autumn mornings when temperatures are cooler and the exposed tel is easier to explore; the site is open-air and gets very hot in summer.
- Allow time to climb to the summit of the tell for the clearest sense of the ancient city layout and broad views of the surrounding plain - the top vantage points are where most key remains are visible.
- Combine the tel visit with nearby archaeological museums or signage in the area to better understand the sequence of occupation and the significance of the site's fortifications and gates.
