Teatro Massimo in Palermo is Italy’s largest opera house, completed in the late 19th century and noted for its grand neoclassical architecture and large auditorium.

The principal attraction is the vast horseshoe-shaped auditorium, which seats a large audience and hosts opera, ballet and concert productions. The ornate foyers and grand exterior steps are also visited for their architectural detail and panoramic views of the surrounding square.

Teatro Massimo is located at Piazza Verdi in central Palermo. From Palermo Centrale railway station it’s a short walk (about 10-15 minutes) along city streets such as Via Maqueda to Piazza Verdi. If driving from the airport (Falcone-Borsellino) expect roughly a 35-45 minute drive (about 35 km) along the A29 into the city.

• Book a guided tour or tickets in advance-Teatro Massimo's interior and backstage areas are only open on scheduled tours or before performances, and tours often sell out on weekends.
• Enter from Piazza Verdi and arrive at least 30 minutes before a performance to enjoy the grand exterior and find a good spot on the steps; weekday matinees and off-season performances are noticeably quieter.
