Taurus Mountains

Mountains Mountain range across southern Turkey, rugged limestone peaks

The Taurus Mountains run across southern Turkey with limestone ridges, cedar forests and high plateaus. Hikers and rural travelers use old mountain passes, visit pastoral villages and explore valleys that link the interior to the Mediterranean coast.

Main image

The Taurus Mountains are a major mountain chain in southern Turkey that form a natural barrier between the Mediterranean coast and the interior Anatolian plateau.

The mountains have long defined regional geography and routes; passes through the range have been important for trade and military campaigns since antiquity. Geologically the range is the product of tectonic uplift associated with the collision of the Anatolian block.

Running roughly parallel to Turkey’s southern coastline, the Taurus range stretches across several provinces including Antalya, Mersin and Adana and overlooks the Mediterranean to the south.

  • Geographic role: The Taurus Mountains form the main mountainous barrier between the Anatolian plateau and the Mediterranean coast across southern Turkey.
  • Historic routes: Contain high alpine terrain and deep river valleys, with historic routes and passes used since antiquity for trade and military movements.

What to See #

  • Cilician Gates: The Cilician Gates (Gülek Pass) is a major historic pass through the range that connects central Anatolia with the Cilician plain and Mediterranean coast.

How to Get to Taurus Mountains #

The Taurus Mountains run along Turkey’s southern Mediterranean coast and are normally reached by road from the coastal cities of Antalya, Mersin or Adana. Major access is via the D400 coastal highway; from Antalya (and Antalya Airport, AYT) you can drive inland on regional/provincial roads to reach foothill towns and trailheads - driving distances to lower slopes typically start from a few dozen kilometres and increase depending on which part of the range you aim for.

Intercity buses run from Antalya, Adana and Mersin to mountain towns (Alanya, Kemer, Kaş and others); after the bus or car ride you will normally transfer onto smaller local roads and walk or hike from the nearest village or parking spot to reach mountain trails.

Tips for Visiting Taurus Mountains #

  • Visit in spring (April-June) or autumn (September-October) when mountain passes are free of winter snow and plains aren't at peak summer heat-these seasons give clearer views and more stable hiking conditions.
  • For dramatic scenery and straightforward road access to the central Taurus, approach via the historic Cilician Gates (Gülek Pass) on the main Tarsus-Adana route; the pass offers panoramic vistas and is a common entry into the interior ranges.
  • Most visitors stick to the coastal and Antalya-area foothills; for fewer people and genuine alpine terrain head toward the Aladağlar section of the Taurus for climbing routes and high plateaus rather than crowded seaside trailheads.

Best Time to Visit Taurus Mountains #

Best visited in spring or autumn for comfortable hiking and pleasant mountain scenery, with summer usable at higher elevations and winter bringing snow.

Spring
March-May · ~5-20°C (varies with elevation)
Mild temperatures and blooming vegetation make this a prime time for hiking and mountain drives; lower slopes are warmer than high passes.
Summer

Lowland areas can be hot and dry while higher trails remain cool-good for alpine hiking but expect heat at lower elevations.
