Olba (ancient city) Archaeological Site

Olba is an ancient settlement and archaeological site in Mersin Province on the southern Anatolian coast, notable for Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine remains. The ruins include temple foundations, a basilica and remnants of civic infrastructure.

Olba developed as a local center in Hellenistic and Roman periods and later continued under Byzantine administration, leaving layered architectural remains from different eras. Over centuries the settlement declined and its structures fell into ruin, leaving the archaeological traces visible today.

Located in southern Turkey’s Mersin Province near the Taurus foothills, the site occupies a hillside position inland from the Mediterranean coast within a rural landscape.

• Multi-period archaeology: The site combines Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine remains - visitors can see temple foundations, church masonry and ancient water-management structures on the hillside ruins.

What to See#

• Temple and acropolis: A hillside acropolis area with temple foundations and dressed stone indicates the civic-religious core of the settlement, with visible blocks and podiums from Hellenistic and Roman building phases.
• Basilica and waterworks: Remains of later Christian occupation include a Byzantine basilica and associated masonry; several large cisterns and aqueduct fragments survive in the surrounding slopes.

Olba lies inland from the Mediterranean coast of Mersin Province. The nearest larger towns are Erdemli and Silifke; from either, rent a car or hire a driver for the rural roads that lead toward Mount Amanus foothills. Local minibuses (dolmuş) serve nearby villages, but final access often requires a short walk over uneven terrain.

• Wear sturdy shoes-the site's ruins are uneven and paths can be muddy after rain.
• Bring water and sun protection; the area receives hot sun in summer and little shade among the ruins.
• Hire a local guide in Erdemli or Silifke who can place the site in the wider context of Cilician trade routes and Roman provincial administration.
