How to Get to Taunus #
Taunus is the low mountain range immediately northwest of Frankfurt. By car it’s a short drive from Frankfurt-many popular trailheads and towns such as Bad Homburg, Königstein and Oberursel lie roughly 20-40 km from central Frankfurt via the A66 (westbound) or A3 (north/south connections) and regional roads; parking is available at trailheads.
You can also reach the southern Taunus by public transport from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof: S‑Bahn and regional trains run to towns on the southern slopes (for example Bad Homburg and Friedrichsdorf on S‑Bahn services), and from those stations it’s typically a 10-30 minute walk to local trails and viewpoints.
Tips for Visiting Taunus #
- Go early on a weekday (morning) to avoid the heavy weekend hike traffic that builds on popular ridge trails and the Großer Feldberg area.
- Use Bad Homburg or Königstein as practical access points from Frankfurt - they are common gateways with regional transport and parking before you join Taunus trails.
- Allocate time to visit the Saalburg Roman fort and museum near Bad Homburg - the reconstructed Limes site is often missed by visitors who stick only to the high-ridge viewpoints.
- If you want quieter walks, pick lesser-used trailheads that start from small towns such as Schmitten or Wehrheim rather than the main Feldberg car parks.
Best Time to Visit Taunus #
Best visited late spring through early autumn (May-September) for the most reliable weather and hiking access.
