Tashirojima
Island Small island noted for resident cat population and fishing
A small island in Miyagi Prefecture known for its large cat population, Tashirojima draws day-visitors and photographers to fishing hamlets, cat shrines and coastal walks.
Tashirojima is a small island in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, popularly known as a “cat island” because of its high population of free-roaming cats relative to people. The island is part of Ishinomaki city and is notable for its informal cat-related attractions.
Small fishing settlements, cat shelters and a few shrine structures associated with local cat lore are the principal sights. Visitors come for short boat trips, photography and observing the resident cats; there are no large tourist facilities on the island.
The island developed as a fishing community over many generations; its human population has declined as younger residents moved to the mainland. The island and its buildings have been affected by demographic change and by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in the wider region.
Tashirojima sits off the coast of northeastern Honshu in Miyagi Prefecture within the waters administered by Ishinomaki. Access is by small boats from nearby ports on the mainland.
- Cats and local care: Cats on the island are largely community-managed by local residents; feeding and simple shelters are common, so bring cat-friendly behavior and avoid leaving food wrappers.
- Services: No large shops or services - plan supplies and transport from Ishinomaki or nearby ports.
