Tashichho Dzong is the chief administrative and religious fortress in Thimphu, Bhutan, serving as the seat of government ministries and the central monastic body. It is a focal point of national administration and major state ceremonies.
The complex includes the throne room, large assembly halls and monastery quarters arranged around successive courtyards, with ornate painted interiors and Bhutanese architectural features. The dzong hosts the annual Thimphu Tsechu festival and other national events.
The site has a long history as a monastic and administrative center; the present buildings were substantially rebuilt and renovated in the 20th century to accommodate modern administrative functions while retaining traditional form. It continues to function as both a working government site and an active monastic institution.
Tashichho Dzong sits on the northern bank of the Wang Chhu river in central Thimphu and is easily reachable from the city center by road and footpaths.
- Access and festival: The dzong houses both government offices and the central monastic body, so public access is limited to certain courtyards and times; the Thimphu Tsechu festival is the best chance to see traditional mask dances there.
