Tantallon Castle is a mid-14th-century cliff-top fortress in East Lothian, Scotland, built as a stronghold of the Douglas family and now preserved as a dramatic ruin. It occupies a commanding position overlooking the Firth of Forth.

The surviving semicircular curtain wall and gatehouse dominate the ruin and provide clear examples of medieval defensive design. Cliff-top walks around the site give expansive views toward the Bass Rock and across the Firth of Forth, while interior ruins reveal the footprint of the keep and service ranges.

Constructed in the mid-1300s by the Douglas family as a fortified noble residence, the castle saw sieges and use in later Scottish conflicts and declined after artillery damage in the 17th century. It has since been conserved as a historic ruin and is interpreted for the public.

Perched on a promontory near North Berwick in East Lothian, the castle overlooks the Firth of Forth and faces several offshore islands. It is reachable from coastal roads east of Edinburgh and is commonly visited from towns along the East Lothian coast.

Tantallon Castle lies on the East Lothian coast near North Berwick. From Edinburgh drive east on the A1 then follow local roads toward North Berwick and the castle car park; the drive typically takes around 40-50 minutes depending on traffic. There is a short walk from the parking area down to the castle and cliff viewpoint.

• Time your visit for late afternoon (golden hour) when the low sun enhances the drama of the cliff-top ruins and gives sweeping views of the Firth of Forth and Bass Rock.
• Park at the designated visitor parking by the castle and walk the cliff-paths to view the fortress from both seaward and inland perspectives-views from below and behind the castle reveal details missed from the front approach.
• Avoid peak summer coach arrivals by visiting on a weekday or later in the afternoon; the site is compact so staggered arrival times make for a better experience and clearer photos.
