Tanjung Datu National Park
National Park Coastal national park with rich marine biodiversity
Tanjung Datu National Park on Sarawak’s far west preserves lowland rainforest and small coastal coves; visitors arrange boat access from Sematan for short treks, wildlife viewing and shallow-water snorkelling.
Tanjung Datu National Park is a protected area at the western tip of Sarawak on the island of Borneo, protecting coastal rainforest, beaches, headlands, and adjacent nearshore marine habitats. It is one of Sarawak’s coastal park areas and is valued for its intact lowland forest and marine life.
The park contains rocky headlands and sandy bays along with lowland dipterocarp forest typical of Borneo’s coastal fringe, and nearshore coral communities. Recreational uses are limited and generally low-impact, focused on short hikes, wildlife observation, and snorkeling where permitted.
The park was established by the Sarawak state government to conserve the distinctive coastal and marine ecosystems at the cape. Management emphasises habitat protection and controlled visitor access due to the site’s ecological sensitivity.
Tanjung Datu sits on the westernmost shore of Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo, near the small coastal settlements to the east of the cape. The park occupies a remote stretch of coastline and is accessed by boat from local landing points.
- Access: Access typically requires a boat from the nearby Sematan area and visits are easiest in the dry season when sea conditions are calmer.
- Habitats: The park protects lowland dipterocarp and coastal forest as well as nearshore reefs, so visitors may combine short coastal hikes with snorkeling in protected bays.
