Tangkoko Batuangus Nature Reserve is a protected forest area on the Minahasa Peninsula of North Sulawesi, Indonesia, that conserves lowland and montane tropical forest and a suite of endemic animals. It is most noted for populations of the Sulawesi crested macaque and several tarsier species.
Trails through the reserve lead to viewpoints, habitat edges and roosting sites where visitors commonly see crested macaques, black macaques and nocturnal tarsiers; local guides run early-morning and night walks to maximize sightings. The reserve also supports endemic birds and lesser-known mammals restricted to Sulawesi.
Established to protect native forest and biodiversity, the reserve is managed with a mix of conservation and community outreach to reduce pressures from hunting and deforestation. Infrastructure for visitors is modest and focused on low-impact access.
Tangkoko lies northeast of the city of Manado, near the port town of Bitung on the northeastern tip of Sulawesi’s Minahasa Peninsula. The terrain is volcanic and rugged, with forested ridges rising from coastal plains.
- Endemic wildlife viewing: The reserve is known for endemic species such as the Sulawesi crested macaque and the spectral tarsier, which are best observed at dawn and dusk on guided walks.
