The Tanggula Mountains are a high mountain range on the central Tibetan Plateau, forming part of the border region between the Tibet Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province in China. The range contains high passes and several glaciated peaks and is significant for its high plateau environment.

A major modern transport crossing is the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, which traverses the Tanggula region and reaches an elevation above 5,000 metres at the Tanggula Pass. The range marks a high, sparsely inhabited part of the plateau with cold alpine conditions and extensive permafrost in places.

Historically the mountains are part of nomadic grazing and pilgrimage landscapes for Tibetan communities and have been crossed by expeditions and trade routes. Contemporary significance also includes strategic transport links and high-altitude scientific observation.

Geographically the Tanggula range runs roughly east-west across the central Tibetan Plateau and contributes to the plateau’s high-elevation topography between Qinghai and the Tibet Autonomous Region.

  • Qinghai-Tibet Railway crossing: The Qinghai-Tibet Railway crosses the Tanggula range and reaches an elevation of over 5,000 metres at the Tanggula Pass, one of the highest railway points in the world.
