Main image

Tamarindito is a Classic Maya archaeological site in the western Petén region of Guatemala, containing plazas, temple mounds and carved monuments. It was occupied during the Classic period of Maya civilization and contains architectural groups and inscriptions used to reconstruct local history.

The site lies inland in the forested Petén Department and is one of several contemporary Maya centers in that part of the region. Fieldwork and epigraphic study at Tamarindito have helped clarify political relationships among neighboring sites during the Classic era.

Tamarindito is located in the central-western Petén, within Guatemala’s lowland rainforest; the nearest major population centers are other Petén towns and archaeological sites rather than large cities.
