Taman Sari
Building Historic royal water garden complex in Yogyakarta
Former royal garden complex in Yogyakarta, Taman Sari features pools, underground chambers and ornate pavilions; visitors tour the water castle for history, photography and proximity to the kraton.
Taman Sari is an 18th-century royal garden and water-palace complex in Yogyakarta on the island of Java, Indonesia, built during the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I in the mid-1700s (construction began around 1758). It served as a private retreat and bathing complex for the Yogyakarta Sultanate and is commonly called the Water Castle.
The complex contains bathing pools, pavilions and engineered water features linked by channels and courtyards, with the most notable internal structure being a sunken, circular underground chamber. Many buildings were partly ruined by earthquakes and later changes, so the site now presents a mix of restored and ruined structures that visitors move between on foot.
Taman Sari was commissioned and constructed under the authority of the Yogyakarta sultanate in the mid-18th century for royal leisure, ceremonial use and private residence functions. Over the 19th and 20th centuries parts fell into disrepair; selective conservation and archaeological work have exposed rooms, pools and the underground mosque.
The site sits immediately west of the Kraton (Sultan’s Palace) in central Yogyakarta, within the city fabric and reachable on foot from the palace and nearby Malioboro shopping area.
- Best time: Best visited in the morning when temperatures are lower and sunlight better reveals carved stonework and pools.
- Access: Located adjacent to the Yogyakarta Sultan's Palace (Kraton) and commonly combined with a short walk or guided tour of the Kraton quarter.
- Highlight: The underground circular mosque known as Sumur Gumuling is one of the most photographed sections and illustrates the complex's mixed ceremonial and practical functions.
What to See #
- Sumur Gumuling: An 18th-century underground chamber with a circular plan that functioned as a mosque and acoustically resonant meeting space; built during the original construction phase in the mid-1700s.
- Umbul Pasiraman (Water Baths): A sequence of bathing pools and pavilions that formed the royal bathing complex, originally used by the sultan and royal household and linked by canals and walkways.
How to Get to Taman Sari #
Taman Sari is a short walk (10-15 minutes) from the Kraton (Sultan’s Palace) in central Yogyakarta. From Malioboro Street it is about a 15-20 minute walk; taxis and becak (cycle rickshaws) are also available for short trips.
