Talamanca Range-La Amistad Reserves

The Talamanca Range-La Amistad Reserves is a large transboundary protected complex that spans parts of Costa Rica and Panama and protects extensive montane and lowland tropical forests in the Talamanca mountain chain. It is recognised for its biological diversity and intact forest cover.

The reserves encompass a wide range of ecosystems, from lowland rainforest and swamp to montane cloud forest and high-elevation páramo-like habitats, supporting significant numbers of plant and animal species. The area is also important for indigenous communities and traditional land uses.

The reserves were established through national protected-area designations and international cooperation to conserve large contiguous tracts of forest and to protect watershed and biodiversity values. Management is coordinated between Costa Rican and Panamanian authorities, with zones for strict protection and sustainable use.

Geographically the reserves follow the Talamanca Range along the southeastern portion of Costa Rica and across the border into western Panama; portions lie within Limón Province and adjacent provinces in Costa Rica. The landscape is largely mountainous and remote.

• La Amistad International Park: A binational protected area that includes both Costa Rican and Panamanian national parks and reserves, established to conserve large tracts of montane and lowland tropical forest across the Talamanca Range.
• Talamanca Range: The Talamanca Range itself forms the high-elevation backbone of the reserves and contains extensive cloud forest habitats and montane ecosystems rising to several thousand metres.
