Taksim Square is a major public square in the Beyoğlu district on the European side of Istanbul, Turkey, and serves as a central transport and meeting point. The square is anchored by the Republic Monument, unveiled in 1928.
The square is the head of İstiklal Avenue, a pedestrian thoroughfare more than a kilometre long lined with shops, cafés and cultural venues, and sits beside Gezi Park, a compact urban green space. The modern configuration of the square dates from the early 20th century, with the Republic Monument erected in 1928; the area has evolved as a civic and commercial heart of Istanbul’s modern era.
