Takht-e Soleymān

Takht-e Soleyman is an archaeological complex in West Azerbaijan province of Iran that preserves the remains of a Sasanian-period religious and administrative centre, including a monumental fire temple within a fortified precinct. The site is often translated as the “Throne of Solomon” and is protected for its historical and architectural significance.

Prominent remains include the citadel, defensive walls, palace foundations, and the temple platform associated with Zoroastrian worship during the Sasanian era. The layout and surviving masonry illustrate the site’s ceremonial and strategic functions in late antiquity.

The complex was prominent in Sasanian times (3rd to 7th centuries CE) and continued to be reused and altered in later medieval periods; historical sources and archaeological evidence indicate it was an important regional centre before damage and decline in the post-Sasanian era. Excavations and conservation efforts have documented the site’s stratigraphy and major architectural phases.

Located on a high plateau in northwestern Iran, the site sits in a volcanic and mountainous landscape of West Azerbaijan province near the modern town of Takab and is accessible by road from regional centres.
