Tåkern
Lake Freshwater lake and internationally important bird reserve
Tåkern is a shallow lake and protected bird reserve in Östergötland. Birdwatchers visit in spring and autumn to observe waterfowl, marsh species and maintained hides along marked paths.
Tåkern is a shallow lake and wetland complex in Östergötland County, Sweden, recognised as one of the country’s most important bird lakes. It is managed for nature conservation and birdlife.
The site is noted for extensive reed beds, open shallow water and a network of hides and observation towers used for birdwatching. People go to see waterfowl, waders and migratory species from fixed hides and short trails that skirt the shoreline.
Historically the lake and its margins have been used for traditional fishing and haymaking; conservation management in the 20th century shifted the focus toward protecting habitat for breeding and migrating birds. The area is now subject to protected-area measures to maintain water levels and reedbed habitats.
Tåkern sits in south-central Sweden within Östergötland County in the lowland plain south of Lake Vättern. The reserve occupies a distinct shallow-lake basin surrounded by agricultural land and small forest patches.
- Bird migration: Best bird activity is during spring and autumn migration, when large numbers of waders and waterfowl pass through and many species are easier to observe from hides and towers.
- Viewing tips: Several marked walking trails and bird hides around the lake provide the main viewpoints and access; binoculars and a spotting scope are recommended for close observation.
