Takalik Abaj

Takalik Abaj is a Pre-Columbian archaeological site in the Retalhuleu Department of Guatemala, notable for its long sequence of occupation and the presence of both Olmec-influenced sculpture and later Maya architecture.

Takalik Abaj was occupied for a prolonged period spanning preclassic to classic eras and served as an important regional center on the Pacific slope where Olmec and Maya influences intersected. Excavations in the 20th and 21st centuries have revealed carved monuments and architectural layouts that document that cultural transition.

The site sits on the Pacific piedmont of southwestern Guatemala in Retalhuleu Department, inland from the coastal plain and accessible by regional roads from nearby towns.
