Taiwan Itineraries: 7, 10 and 14 Days Round the Island

Taiwan itineraries day by day: 7 days of Taipei, Sun Moon Lake and Tainan; 10 days on the east coast; 14 days round the island with Alishan and Kenting; plus a food and temples route.

Seven days in Taiwan is enough for Taipei, a night at Sun Moon Lake and the old capital Tainan, all linked by the high-speed rail down the west coast. Ten days lets you add the east coast between Hualien and Taitung and loop back through Kaohsiung, and two weeks covers the whole island, with sunrise at Alishan and the beaches of Kenting on top.

Taiwan is about 400 km long and its transport is excellent: Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) runs Taipei to Kaohsiung’s Zuoying in about 1 hour 35 minutes on the fastest trains, the TRA railway circles the whole island, and buses fill the gaps to the lakes and mountains. The plans below say where to sleep, how to move between stops and roughly what each costs. Prices are per person in New Taiwan dollars (NT$30 is about US$1).

How these itineraries work#

Move by rail

THSR for the west coast (Taipei to Taichung about 50 minutes, about NT$700). TRA express trains for the east coast, booked up to 28 days ahead, as Hualien trains sell out.

Buses for the lakes

Sun Moon Lake, Alishan and Kenting have no train. Direct buses leave from Taichung HSR, Chiayi and Zuoying HSR stations respectively.

Daily budget

NT$1,800-2,500 for hostels, street food and trains; NT$3,500-5,500 mid-range with private rooms and a few tours. Weekends cost more at scenic spots.

Taroko in 2026

After the April 2024 earthquake, most Taroko trails are still closed and the gorge road opens in timed windows only. Check the park’s status page before planning a day there.

Sleep midweek

Sun Moon Lake, Alishan, Kenting and Hualien fill up on Friday and Saturday. Put the scenic nights on weekdays and Taipei at the weekend.

Pay with EasyCard

One EasyCard (or iPASS) covers the metro, city buses, TRA local trains, YouBike and convenience stores island-wide. Top it up at any 7-Eleven.

7 days: Taipei, Sun Moon Lake and Tainan#

The classic first trip runs straight down the west coast by high-speed train and needs no backtracking until the final ride home.

Day Plan Sleep
1 Arrive at Taoyuan Airport, airport MRT to Taipei Main (about 40 minutes). Evening at a night market Taipei
2 Taipei 101 or the Elephant Mountain trail, Lungshan Temple and Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall; Raohe or Ningxia night market Taipei
3 National Palace Museum in the morning, Beitou hot springs in the afternoon, or a day trip to Jiufen and Shifen Taipei
4 THSR to Taichung (50 minutes), bus to Sun Moon Lake (about 1 hour 40 minutes). Boat across the lake, cycle the lakeside path Sun Moon Lake
5 Sunrise at the lake, Ci’en Pagoda or the ropeway; bus back to Taichung HSR, THSR to Tainan (about 45 minutes) Tainan
6 Tainan’s temples, Chihkan Tower, Anping and an evening of snacks on Guohua Street Tainan
7 Morning in Tainan, THSR to Taoyuan for the flight (about 1 hour 40 minutes)

The pace is two full city days, one travel-and-lake day and one and a half days in Tainan, which is about right for a first visit. At Sun Moon Lake, stay in Shuishe village by the main pier, where the buses stop and the boats leave; Ita Thao across the water is quieter and has the Thao village food street. Buy the lake boat ticket at the pier, rent a bicycle or e-bike for the flat stretch of the Xiangshan cycle path, and take the ropeway up to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village if you have children with you. Leave Taichung’s bus station early on day 4 to beat the weekend tour groups.

In Tainan, sleep in the West Central district near Shennong Street or the Confucius Temple, so that the temples, the old Hayashi Department Store and the best snack shops are walkable. Breakfast is the main event: beef soup from about 05:00, milkfish congee and rice cakes. The THSR station is 30 minutes out of the centre, so allow time for the shuttle bus or the short TRA connection from Shalun.

Cost line: THSR Taipei-Taichung and Tainan-Taoyuan plus buses come to about NT$2,500-3,000. Budget NT$14,000-18,000 for the week mid-range, excluding flights.

For more on the capital, our Taipei itineraries break the first three days down hour by hour, and where to stay in Taipei compares the neighbourhoods.

10 days: Taipei, the east coast and the south#

This loop adds the island’s wild Pacific side. It goes clockwise from Taipei down the east coast by train, crosses the southern tip to Kaohsiung and returns by THSR.

Day Plan Sleep
1-3 Taipei as in the 7-day plan, with Jiufen on day 3 Taipei
4 TRA Taroko or Puyuma express to Hualien (about 2 to 2.5 hours, about NT$440). Qixingtan beach and Dongdamen night market Hualien
5 Taroko and Qingshui Cliff day (see below) Hualien
6 East coast by car or tour bus along Highway 11: Shitiping, Sanxiantai’s footbridge, then Taitung. Or the inland TRA through the East Rift Valley Taitung
7 Taitung: Zhiben hot springs, the coastal bike path, or a day at Chishang’s rice fields Taitung
8 TRA South Link to Kaohsiung (about 2 to 2.5 hours). Pier-2 Art Center, Lotus Pond and Liuhe or Ruifeng night market Kaohsiung
9 Fo Guang Shan in the morning, then 15 minutes by THSR to Tainan for the afternoon and evening Tainan
10 THSR to Taoyuan for the flight

The east coast is where a hired car pays off. Highway 11 between Hualien and Taitung runs about 170 km along the sea, with stops at the Shitiping rock terraces, the Tropic of Cancer marker and the eight-arched footbridge to Sanxiantai, and public buses on it are infrequent. Car hire starts from about NT$1,800-2,500 a day and requires an International Driving Permit. Without a car, the TRA line inland through the East Rift Valley is the easy alternative: get off at Yuli or Chishang, rent a bicycle and ride through the rice paddies for a couple of hours before continuing south.

In Hualien, base yourself near the station or in the city centre by Dongdamen night market, as early trains and tours start from there. Kaohsiung is best slept in near Central Park or the harbour, where both MRT lines and the light rail meet.

Cost line: trains and buses about NT$3,500-4,500. Budget NT$22,000-28,000 mid-range, more if you hire a car on the east coast.

Planning a Taroko day after the earthquake

The 3 April 2024 earthquake brought down huge rockfalls in Taroko National Park. As of October 2026, the park lists the Shakadang, Swallow Grotto (Yanzikou), Tunnel of Nine Turns, Eternal Spring Shrine, Baiyang, Buluowan and Zhuilu Old Road trails as closed. The Central Cross-Island Highway (Highway 8) between the park entrance and Tianxiang opens only in five daily release windows (06:30-08:00, 10:00-10:05, 12:00-13:00, 15:00-15:05 and 17:00-18:00) and closes overnight, and trails close again whenever a typhoon warning is issued.

That still leaves a good day: the cliff-top viewpoints at Qingshui Cliff on the Su-hua Highway, the pebble beach at Qixingtan, the Taroko gateway and visitor-centre area, and a drive into the gorge timed to the release windows with a local driver or tour. For high-mountain scenery, reach Hehuanshan from the west side via Puli and Highway 14A, where trails are open. Check the Taroko National Park road and trail status page before you go, because it changes month to month.

The Eternal Spring Shrine at the entrance to Taroko Gorge: national park entry is free, and a day tour from Hualien costs NT$1,800 to NT$3,500

14 days: round the island#

Two weeks lets you do the full circle without rushing, adding Alishan’s forest railway and a beach stop at Kenting to the 10-day loop. Travelling anticlockwise puts the mountains early and the beach at the end.

Day Plan Sleep
1-3 Taipei, with a day trip to Jiufen, Yehliu or Yangmingshan Taipei
4 THSR to Taichung; Rainbow Village, the National Taichung Theater and Fengjia night market Taichung
5 Bus to Sun Moon Lake (about 1 hour 40 minutes); boat, bike and lakeside temples Sun Moon Lake
6 Direct bus from Sun Moon Lake to Alishan (about 3 to 3.5 hours, a few departures a day). Afternoon on the giant-tree trails Alishan
7 Sunrise train to Zhushan, then the Alishan Forest Railway down to Chiayi, which reopened along its full length in 2024. THSR to Tainan Tainan
8 Tainan’s temples, Anping, Chimei Museum Tainan
9 THSR to Zuoying, Kenting Express bus (about 2 to 2.5 hours). Beach afternoon Kenting
10 Scooter or tour round the peninsula: Eluanbi lighthouse, Longpan Park, Maobitou Kenting
11 Bus to Fangliao, TRA up the South Link to Taitung (about 3 hours in total) Taitung
12 Highway 11 up the coast or the East Rift Valley by train to Hualien Hualien
13 Taroko and Qingshui Cliff day Hualien
14 TRA to Taipei (about 2 to 2.5 hours) and on to the airport

Alishan is the logistics puzzle of this route. The National Forest Recreation Area charges an entry fee (around NT$200-300) and its hotels near the Zhaoping and Alishan stations book out weeks ahead for weekends and the March and April blossom season. The sunrise train to Zhushan leaves before dawn, with the departure time posted the evening before at the station; buy the ticket that night. If the railway is sold out, buses run from Chiayi HSR and Chiayi TRA stations up the mountain in about 2.5 hours.

The pace eases in the second week: two nights each in Tainan and Kenting and a slower east coast. Kenting town’s main street is noisy and busy on summer weekends; the beaches at Baisha and Nanwan and the quieter guesthouses at Hengchun suit a calmer stay.

Cost line: trains, buses and the Alishan railway come to about NT$5,000-6,500. Budget NT$30,000-40,000 mid-range for the fortnight.

馃挕 Pro Tip

Book the TRA trains to and from Hualien and the Alishan Forest Railway the day sales open, 28 days ahead for TRA, especially for Fridays, Sundays and holidays. If the express is full, a local train or a seat-less ticket still gets you there.

Food and temples: 8 days down the west coast#

For a trip built around eating and folk religion, follow the old Hokkien towns south. It works well in winter, when the west coast is dry.

Day Plan Sleep
1-2 Taipei: Dihua Street and Dadaocheng, Lungshan Temple, the Xiahai City God Temple, a different night market each evening Taipei
3 THSR to Taichung; Fengjia and Yizhong night markets, Chun Shui Tang for the original bubble tea Taichung
4 Day trip to Lukang in Changhua (about 1 hour by bus): Tianhou Temple, Longshan Temple and oyster omelettes on the old streets Taichung
5-6 THSR to Tainan. Grand Mazu Temple, the Confucius Temple, beef soup at breakfast, milkfish, danzai noodles and Shennong Street at night Tainan
7 Kaohsiung: Fo Guang Shan, the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas at Lotus Pond, Ruifeng night market Kaohsiung
8 THSR to Taoyuan from Zuoying (about 1 hour 45 minutes)

Cost line: about NT$3,000 for trains and buses; budget NT$15,000-20,000 mid-range, of which food is the best-value part.

How to adapt these plans#

First-timers: the 7-day plan is the safest bet. Add Taroko only if you can give it two nights in Hualien, since the timed road windows make a same-day return from Taipei rushed.

Families: swap Alishan’s cold dawn for an extra day at Sun Moon Lake or Kaohsiung, and hire a car on the east coast. Children under 12 travel at reduced fares on THSR and TRA.

Slow travel: three weeks lets you add Penghu by plane or ferry from Kaohsiung or Chiayi in summer, Green Island from Taitung, or a few days hiking in Shei-Pa National Park. Taiwan’s digital nomad guide covers longer stays.

Typhoon season and plum rains: from mid-May to October, keep one spare day and avoid mountain roads after heavy rain. In winter, run the itinerary the other way round so you reach the south when the north is grey. See best time to visit Taiwan for the full picture.

No time for the east: a 5-day trip can do Taipei plus one overnight at Sun Moon Lake, or Taipei and Tainan by THSR.

Taiwan itinerary FAQs#

How many days do you need in Taiwan?

Seven days covers Taipei and the west coast highlights; ten days adds the east coast; two weeks lets you circle the island including Alishan and Kenting. Most first-time visitors find 10 to 14 days the right length.

Is Taroko Gorge open in 2026?

Partly. As of October 2026 the main road through the gorge opens only in timed windows and the classic trails, including Shakadang, Swallow Grotto and the Tunnel of Nine Turns, remain closed after the 2024 earthquake. Check the national park’s road and trail status page before visiting.

Should I go clockwise or anticlockwise around Taiwan?

Either works by train. Anticlockwise (west coast first) suits winter, because you reach the dry south while the north is wet, and puts Alishan early. Clockwise makes sense if you want Taroko and the east coast before the south.

Is the high-speed rail worth it in Taiwan?

Yes for the west coast: it cuts Taipei to Tainan to under two hours. Note that most THSR stations sit outside city centres, so add a shuttle or local train connection of 15 to 30 minutes.

Can you do Sun Moon Lake as a day trip from Taipei?

It is possible but long: about four to five hours of travel for the round trip via Taichung HSR. An overnight stay is much better and lets you see the lake at dawn.

Do I need a car to travel around Taiwan?

No. Trains and buses reach every stop in these itineraries. A car or scooter helps on the east coast’s Highway 11 and around the Kenting peninsula, and an International Driving Permit is required.

How do I get from Taipei to Hualien?

Take a TRA Taroko or Puyuma express train from Taipei Main Station, which takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. Tickets sell out on weekends and holidays, so book as soon as sales open.

Is Alishan worth it?

Yes if you like forests and mountain views: the giant-cypress trails, the forest railway and the sunrise over the sea of clouds are unlike anywhere else on the island. Go midweek, and pack warm clothes for the dawn.
