Rainbow Village is a small former military dependents’ village in Taichung, Taiwan, transformed into a public folk-art site by a local resident from around 2008. It is notable for its vivid, figurative murals and bright palette.

A compact cluster of brightly painted houses and narrow lanes decorated with animal, human and abstract motifs. The artwork covers exterior walls, doors and pavements across the village, creating multiple short photo spots and walk-through scenes.

The village was painted and maintained by veteran resident Huang Yung-Fu beginning in about 2008; local students and preservation advocates campaigned to prevent demolition and the area was preserved as a cultural attraction. Its survival has been attributed to the artist’s work and community support.

Situated in Taichung city (Nantun area), the site sits close to the National Taichung University of Education and other central Taichung neighborhoods, within easy reach of the city’s urban transport.

• Artist: The murals were painted starting around 2008 by Huang Yung-Fu, widely known as “Grandpa Rainbow”, a former resident who began decorating the village to save it from demolition.
• Visit length: A very compact site - most visitors spend under an hour exploring the painted houses and alleys, making it easy to combine with other Taichung attractions.

Rainbow Village is in Taichung’s Nantun District. It’s a short taxi ride from Taichung Railway Station (about 15-20 minutes depending on traffic) or reachable by local buses-check Taichung City bus routes for the nearest stop.

• Talk to local vendors and art students-the village grew from one man's paintings and the community remains closely involved.
• Buy small craft from on-site sellers to support local families; the village depends on tourism revenue.
