Taita Hills

The Taita Hills are a compact mountain range in Taita-Taveta County in southeastern Kenya, forming a distinct block of highland forest within the broader Eastern Arc region. They are recognized for their exceptional biodiversity and number of local endemic species.

The hills contain scattered, isolated forest patches and steep ridges; these fragments support several endemic birds and plants adapted to the moist upland environment. The area is important for conservation and ecological research because many species have very restricted ranges.

Geologically the hills are part of the ancient Eastern Arc system and have long-standing forest cover in the higher parts, while lower slopes are used for agriculture and settlements. Conservation efforts focus on protecting remaining forest fragments and their endemic flora and fauna.

The Taita Hills are located inland in southeastern Kenya; the steep, forested uplands rise above surrounding plains and small towns such as Wundanyi lie within the hill complex.
